Runnababez Revisit the year that was…2012!

26 Dec

Wow!  What a year it was for the newly formed Runnababez Elite Running team! What started out as just an idea that was discussed over a long run in the winter cold between Jackie Pirtle-Hall & Lisa Cary became a reality in  January 2012.  I don’t think either Runnababe (Jackie & Lisa) thought it would develop as quickly as it did, in it’s only first year in existence…Or maybe they did, they had big goals, big dreams, big ideas and accomplished BIG things together  in 2012! The year started off HUGE to say the least, Jackie Pirtle-Hall accomplished a life long dream and goal of hers by qualifying at the California International Marathon to run in the January 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials.  Such an accomplishment took her to the top of the sport, and competing against the very best marathon runners in the nation, and against world ranked caliber runners.. 2012 saw Jackie Pirtle-Hall develop and turn herself into one of the best marathoners in the country as well.    Not only did she qualify, she placed 70th at the trials, and setting a PR (at the time) of 2:44.20.  This would be a memory for a lifetime, and the  first of many BIG achievements for Jackie.

February, saw the Runnababez continuing upon their development as elite runners and as a team.  Jackie went on to compete in the US  Cross-Country Championships in ST. Louis placing 24th! In March, Jackie ran a PR in the half marathon of 1:15 at the Virginia Beach race and was the 1st American finisher in the international field!

The Runnababez put in the work, miles, strength, and discipline all winter, and it developed into a very successful spring running season.  Starting out in April, with the GO! St. Louis Marathon, Jackie went on to win that race in course record fashion, running another PR in the process regardless of the HILLS.. 2:42!

That same weekend  Lisa Cary hit her first PR of the year (at the time) in the 3000 Meter steeplechase out in the Pomona Pitzer Califonia Invitational of 10:50 winning it as well!

Track season & marathoning was running like a full boar for these Runnababez!  Moving on two weeks later, Jackie decides to push the envelope and push the barriers into a rare and unthinkable task for most with the help of her coach (Coach Sheldon Webster)..running a 2nd marathon only two weeks later after running a previous…?!?! YEs, she did..People may think these Runnababez are crazy in some of the things they do…But, only they& their coaches’ know their bodies and how hard they trained, and what their bodies can take and not take.  Jackie took that 2nd Marathon , the Illinois Cristie Clinic marathon, down like a BEAST!  Yes, she did run a marathon two weeks prior.  Yes, she did win both. Yes, she did set the course records at both.  And yes, she did run all of them under 2:45!

Moving into May, Lisa Cary continued upon her Steeplechasing, and chasing the trials standard…She knocked more time off her steeplechase finishing the NCC Keeler Invite in 10:42.50, and claiming first! Lisa was accepted into a few national caliber track races, one being the Music City Distance Carninval where all the Olympic Trials hopefuls ran trying to hit the trials times.  She finished with another PR in 10:40. Two weeks later, Lisa revamped and gave it one last shot at hitting the 10:15 needed to be in the Olympic Trials Steeplechase, finishing short of the 10:15, but none the less another PR 10:35 with Coach Tim Cary’s guidance at the American Milers Club series race.

After all the Spring/summer track racing & marathoning, the Runnababez produced plenty of sparks on the fall roads!  In June, Jackie hit a road 5k PR of 16:36, winning the All American St. Louis 5k, Lisa also hit a road 5k PR of 17:18 placing 3rd, and fellow Runnababe Lauren Hubbard ran a seasons best at the race as well!  June also marked a big day for Runnababe Anna Tonkin, her wedding day to her lover for life!  She had a morning run with her Runnababe to start her day off right to becoming Mrs. Collette!

July of this year, the Runnababez hosted the first annual highschool girls only Runnababez XC Camp, it was tons of fun for the girls!  And for the camp coaches! They all enjoyed getting ready for the upcoming XC season!  Lisa ran the Bix 7 a week later, and finished as the #10 American in the international race.  July was hot,  but the Runnababez continued to bring the heat…Lisa Cary blazed in the Macklind Mile running another PR of 4:48, and narrowly missing the win in a duel to line!

After a successful summer, the Runnababez kept fine speed into the fall road racing.  In September Lisa Cary won the Fenton 10k with another road PR of 36:53.  Lauren Hubbard placed 3rd in the 5k.  Two weeks later, Lisa ran in the elite field at Miles for Meso 5k, in Alton IL.  Holding on for 8th place.  Lauren Hubbard winning the women’s open 5k.   Here the Runnababez, met (re-met) and became friends with future Runnababe Marion Kandie.  October, Marion Kandie officially joined the Runnababez Elite team, and ran numerous 10k road wins! Finishing the season with a 34:13 road 10k PR!.

October was filled with Half Marathon races, and the Runnababez raced in every single St. Louis half it was time for some fun local racing! LOL.  Jackie Pirtle-Hall started the fall half racing by claiming the win at the Mo Cowbell in a time of 1:21. Several weeks later, Jackie places 2nd at the (hilly) Rock&Roll STL half marathon in 1:21, and after she finishes her half marathon runs in her sister, Jerren who completed her first full marathon!  A week after that Lisa Cary finishes 2nd at the (hilly) Clayton Half Marathon in 1:25.

The fall also brought upon opportunities for the Runnababez to be apart of numerous expo’s and also a motivational speaker appearance by Jackie at a local 10k.  The Runnababez saw this as a new challenge, and a new experience to  give back to the sport and become part of the St. Louis running community by supporting it away from the racing finish lines as well.  The Runnababez enjoyed discussing their experiences, helping train others, answer questions, giving feedback, talking training, nutrition,  on how to become a better runner to others trying to learn and finish their own races.  They really enjoyed this new aspect of giving back to the sport of running, that they got to be a part of and  experience as a first this year, by helping organize a boothe at expos and discuss the newly formed Runnababez racing , apparel, and training clinics they offered.

Winding down the year… Lisa Cary wins the Chesterfield Thanksgiving Turkey Trot in 17:47 on a cold and windy winters day, along with fellow friend Mikey Aitken who claims the win on the men’s side. Lisa Cary dabbled in the marathon in December, since running lots of base miles anyway for next year’s track season. Lisa gained valuable experience in completing  the St. Jude Memphis Marathon, her 3rd  marathon and most successful one due to practicing patience and pacing at (Coach Cary’s urging…) The middle distance runner  finished 7th female overall on a hot December’s day.

Well, whew! What a year it was for the newly formed 2012 Runnababez team!  This year was an amazing year, filled with laughs, miles, trials, tribulations, learning,  and successes.  WE, as Runnababez would like to thank our coaches Sheldon Webster & Tim Cary, our families, our key supporters in Emerge Fitness, Comprehensive Chiropractic, Precision Health, St. Louis Track Club, Fleet Feet Sports & many more because without our supporters we wouldn’t have been able to compete as we did this year! We are very thankful for all your help and support in trying to be the best runners we can be!  Looking forward to a happy, healthy, PR filled, & new adventures in the upcoming year of 2013!
